Introduction transparent

Every hour 9 men and 5 women die from a disease caused by smoking - and the numbers are rising (especiallyamong women). Thirty different causes of death are more common in smokers than non-smokers, including heartattacks, strokes, and many cancers. And it's not just long term, serious damage. Smokingcauses many day-to-day problems as well, like making wounds heal more slowly, or colds and flu feelworse and last longer. This is not so surprising when you realise that tobacco smoke contains more than 4000different chemicals, including some found in fly-killers, nail varnish remover, and car exhaust fumes.

Think of it this way: within a few seconds of someone lighting up, just about every cell in your body (from the tips of your fingers to the tips of your toes) is polluted.
